Transfiguration of Our Lord

Bible readings: 2 Peter 1.16-19 & Luke 9.28-36

This week a poem has been sent to the newsletter team in lieu of a biblical reflection; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and please do feel free to contribute in this way. – Alice

After Meditation
After mediation the trees float on the velveteen grass of Morrab Gardens.
After meditation, the potted flowers in a front yard beckon with their jewel petals.
After meditation a narrow, winding front path in Regent’s Square entices me into its secret embrace.
After meditation the world slows down and the senses heighten.
After meditation all is well, and all shall be well.

This was written after the Contemplative Prayer session at St Mary’s Church, last Monday. – Vicky Howard

Julian Meeting

Opening Prayer
We look to you for life
and for the goodness in our souls
Renew us to wonder.
Lift our eyes to marvel again
at all that you have made.
Whisper our name Beloved –
that we might remember
who we are
and to whom we belong.
Raise us to what we can be,
a source of blessing to all the earth,
friends of creation and bearers of hope.
Then You may rejoice in us,
as we rejoice in You.

Sentence
From everlasting to everlasting, God is.

Blessing
I will sing of Your goodness all my days.
I will seek to magnify You in my being
as long as I shall live.
At the end, I shall abandon myself
entirely into your hands,
and my praise shall be complete.
(Psalm 104 REDUX)

THIS WEEK…

Paul Church Talk: ‘Is the law fit for purpose?’

John Gallagher, Tuesday 6th August

It’s hard to sum up John Gallagher’s career. He has practised as a Barrister for nearly 50 years, is a Master of the Bench of Gray’s Inn and since 1994 has been a part time Judge of the Crown and County Court. He is also an accredited Mediator. I’m not sure what all those roles involve, and I’ve left a lot more out, but he’s clearly very well qualified to lead a really interesting debate and discussion on the current state and future role of the Law. £5.00 entry. Nibbles/wine 7pm, talk at 7.30pm, followed by debate and more nibbles/wine.

Art Exhibition at Paul Church

Wednesday 7th to Sunday 11th August

Paul Church is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of paintings, prints, cards, and pottery by artists Nigel Haward, Diana Hilton, Robin Macdonald and Gemma Swan. There will be an opening morning with coffee on Wednesday 7th from 10am.

Looking forward to seeing you all! – Nigel Haward

COMING SOON…

Climate And Other Things – A Selection of Paintings By George Dow – Friday 16th August

St Mary’s are delighted to be hosting an exhibition of George’s paintings, entitled ‘Climate And Other Things’, until Monday 30th September. The exhibition will preview on Friday 16th August from 5pm-7pm, and will then be open daily from 10am-12pm.

After living in London for 40 years working in HR and spending many holidays in St Ives and across Penwith, George moved to Penzance in 2018 and immersed himself in drawing, painting and performance poetry. He is also chair of the national environmental charity Green Christian (www.greenchristian.org.uk)- and feels that expressing a deep concern for the planet is often best achieved through visual art rather than the sometimes confusing and dogmatic world of words and statistics. The ten paintings on show use a variety of media, and several specifically focus on the effects of the climate and biodiversity crisis which will hopefully provoke a reflective response in viewers. All sale proceeds will be donated to St Mary’s.

Help Required at St Mary’s Summer Fete
Friday 30th August from 11.30am to 3.30pm

After a super productive meeting where Molly, Tristan, Alice, Rhys and Eliza volunteered themselves for numerous tasks, we have just a few things that we’d really like help with:

*Pin the tail on the donkey – would someone like to make this? We can’t draw!
*Facepainting – would someone like to do this? We can’t paint! It doesn’t have to be Monet – we’ll only be charging a small amount.
*Penny and Sue have kindly agreed to make some cakes, but you can never have enough at a church fete!
*Is anyone free on the day to man a stall?
* Tabletop jumble – please bring in your bric-a-brac!

If you can help please email Alice on nightchurchpz@gmail.com

Tombol-aaaaaah! – Friday 30th August

We have put a wooden crate under the leaflet table and would be delighted if you could fill it with donations for the tombola! Nothing too nice please; we want it to be realistic and nostalgic! Do bath cubes still exist? If so, we want them. Tea towels, oven mitts, Bird’s custard, luncheon meat, Blue Nun and Black Tower will all be gratefully received.  – Alice
