Concert St Mary’s Strings
Tuesday 20th July 2021 at 7.30pm
£10 Ticket Adults (Children Free)

St Mary’s Strings, a group of local string players who have been keeping their spirits up with socially distanced chamber music sessions in the church through the months of the pandemic, present a concert of musical and emotional extremes. Writing as an extraordinarily gifted 16 year old in the wealthy heart of Leipzig,  Mendelssohn produced his astonishing string octet, a work brimming over with glorious energy, joy and optimism which, with its finale’s quotations of "For he shall live for ever and ever” from The Messiah  seems rooted in a world of German high art which nothing can topple. Richard Strauss wrote his haunting meditation, Metamorphosen, in the aftermath of the Nazi defeat, with Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin’s opera houses and concert halls in ruins along with Germany’s pride. Does its passionate outpouring , built on quotations from Beethoven, Mozart and his own work, represent despair, resilience or hope? The listener decides! Tickets sales online. Covid regulations will almost certainly limit the size of the audience so try not to arrive too late!
